  26. The PC is a better platform for the PRICE as far as rendering speed is
  27. concerned.( I've said this too many times on this list; SGI graphics hardware,
  28. regardless of model, DOES NOT speed up RAYTRACING.That is not until LW takes
  29. advantage of things like hardware anti-aliasing, lighting, fog, accum.
  30. buffers, phong shading, Z-buffer etc. (Rumored for LW sometime in April by
  31. Xaos tools) Remember, SGI invented OpenGL, which is an offshoot of the once
  32. proprietary IrisGL. Furthermore, the INDY does GL things in SOFTWARE unless
  33. you get the ZX graphics or the new graphics of which I don't recall the name.
  34. Unless you're a UNIX nerd/zealot like myself, don't bother with the SGI. Also,
  35.  software is considerably more expensive on the SGI. I think photoshop goes
  36. for about $1000.00 . WordPerfect, as if you really need a word processor, is
  37. priced around $500+. LightWave on the SGI $2995.00, PC $995.00, Alpha
  38. $1995.00. Lots of neat free stuff on the net though. Don't get me wrong. I
  39. wouldn't work on any other platform, but it's just not price effective for
  40. most people.
